Ernest Buckingham
45715  (Devonshire Regiment)

Little is known about the war record of Ernest Buckingham apart from his medal card, illustrated on this site. We know from the Roll of Honour in Winkleigh church that he served in the Devons. The 1911 census of Winkleigh records that Ernest Buckingham, 22 years old, described as a farmer’s son, was born about 1889 at Blackawton, and was working at Park Farm, Winkleigh. Ernest’s sister, Beatrice, was also staying there as a visitor.

The Medal Card shows that Ernest enlisted at once on 24th November 1914, and was discharged on 22nd November 1917, suffering from Bronchitis. We have no knowledge in which battalion he served, but a list of the Devon Regiments battalions is attached to this account.
