It's Living History Isn't It?
(cover above in photo)

An oral history of life in Winkleigh during the middle and late years of the 20th century.
With young people now moving out of the villages where their families had lived for generations, and with new people moving into the communities, much local and family history and knowledge is being lost. Regional accents and dialect words are disappearing at an alarming rate.
In an effort to giving the present and future generations an understanding of what life was like in Winkleigh, before, during and after WW2, in 2002/2003 Gillian and Peter undertook an oral history project. Thirty-five people who were either born in the village, or who had lived here for many years, were interviewed and recorded. 'It's Living History, Isn't It?' is the result of that work. The recollections of those who gave their time to talk to us are shown verbatim (as far as possible) and there is one letter of memories from a child who was evacuated here during the war.
The book, which runs to 154 pages, includes photographs of the contributors and of the events they have talked about. It costs £5 and is available from: Gillian Holman, The Courtyard, Winkleigh Court, Winkleigh, Devon, EX19 8HZ. If ordering please add £1.50 for post and packing. It is also on sale at Winkleigh Post Office and at D & S Supplies on Winkleigh Airfield.
Funding did not allow us to produce a CD of the recordings but the original discs are on loan to the North Devon Records Office in Barnstaple for anyone who wishes to hear them.)
